Managing Expatriates 22 August 2008, Introduction Being a small Nation, Singapore decided over two decades ago to embark on sprouting a 'Second Economic Wing' by going Regional. Since then, many Singaporean Companies had gone regional amidst a rapidly globalizing world. This trend is expected to continue as the economy continues to expand. Thus many Singaporean Executives have been posted overseas, often with little or no preparation. At the same time Executives have been hired from the region. What does it take to become an Expatriate? Experience has shown that roughly, one in five Expatriates got de-railed in their assignments due to various reasons. What are some of these reasons and are they 'preventable'? Do Companies need to prepare an Executive before posting as an Expatriate overseas, or hiring an Expatriate for the Singapore office, and if so how?
