- Medical Leave Abuse

Is medical leave benefit being abused by employees in Singapore companies?

According to the discussions by human resource (HR) practitioners in the HRSINGAPORE® Community forum, there are instances of medical leave abuse in their organisations.

The misuse of this benefit usually occurs when an employee intentionally spends all their sick leave entitlement and resigning thereafter.

HR practitioners also suggested, in the forum, the following ways to prevent the abuse:

  • Counsel the particular staff to identify the actual cause behind their absence.


  • Warn employees that they would be forthcoming about this issue when new employers call for a reference check.


  • Check the pattern of medical leave and talk to the doctors who issue the medical certificates.
