HRSINGAPORE® Alert
- Workplace Measures for H1N1

As of this writing, there are 5 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, in Singapore. This alert outlines a few of the measures that HR departments could undertake with regard to swine flu.

As every situation is different, companies are strongly advised to seek advice before implementing any steps which may have legal implications.

HR departments should consider developing written policies, guidelines and training materials with information about swine flu, so that employees know how to look for symptoms, avoid contamination, and prevent the spread of the virus.

If an employee is ill with flu-like symptoms, HR should be informed and the employee should go home. Employees should be told not to report for work if they are experiencing flu-like symptoms virus.

In some circumstances, employees may refuse to report for work if they feel the workplace is unsafe. Whether or not this is justified, the HR team will be facing this and a range of other related complex issues.
