HRSINGAPORE® Community Reports September 2007 Are employers responsible for the medical expenses of their foreign workers that exceed the insurance benefit limit? Can employers recover part of the medical fees incurred by the foreign workers from the foreign workers? Many of the HR practitioners in the HRSINGAPORE® Community forum in September, remarked that employers are and must be responsible for the medical expenses of their foreign workers. However a co-payment scheme can be arranged to encourage foreign workers to be responsible for their health and to manage medical costs. A group hospitalization insurance policy with reputable insurers will also help to keep cost of medical expenses low. Under existing Work Permit conditions, employers are responsible for and shall bear the costs of the upkeep and maintenance of their foreign workers, including the provision of medical treatment.
