HRSINGAPORE® Community Reports October - December 2007 How do HR people in Singapore deal with extra marital affairs at work place? HR practitioners in the HRSINGAPORE Community forum have expressed varied opinions on the sensitive issue of extra marital affairs at workplace. The suggested approaches ranged from “close one eye” to that of more conservative “moral policing”. Some believed that as long as extra marital affairs did not interfere with work and affected performance, there was no need for the company to interfere and should be left to the discretion of the employees in question, while others viewed that such issues needed to be handled based on the company’s policy. It was pointed out that, in cases where the policy did not address issues of such nature, there is a need to incorporate norms on acceptable behavior at workplace. Interestingly, some HR practitioners suggested assuming a larger role and higher responsibility of counseling the erring employees. This they felt would ensure the welfare of the employees and their respective families. In parallel, this would protect interest of the company and thwart off any negative consequences.
