HRSINGAPORE® Community Reports February 2007 Dear HR Professionals Should a company grant paid medical leave to an employee who has less than 180 days of service even if government reimbursement is unlikely? Some HR practitioners in the HRSINGAPORE forum this month say that the employee is not entitled to maternity leave at all and should apply for unpaid leave. However, others have suggested that the company view this issue from a moral perspective and consider the union's view. And why not just appeal for reimbursement anyway is the opinion of at least one HR professional who believes that there is "no harm trying". According to the rule, a female employee who has served her employer for at least 180 days before the birth of her child is entitled to paid maternity leave.
